  4. David Peralta – Right Fielder
  5. Yasmany Tomas – Left Fielder
  6. Jake Lamb – 3rd baseman
  7. Brandon Drury – 2nd baseman
  8. Chris Iannetta – Catcher

Projected 2017 Pitching Rotation

  2. Robbie Ray
  3. Taijuan Walker
  4. Shelby Miller
  5. Patrick Corbin

Season Outlook:

There is no doubt that the Diamondbacks are loaded with young talent both in their lineup and in their starting rotation. However, the question will be whether those players can stay healthy and provide consistent quality play for the 2017 season. Paul Goldschmidt is an MVP-caliber player for the Diamondbacks as he hit .297 with 24 home runs last season. The issue is that he doesn’t have another reliable offensive weapon to go along with him. Outfielders A.J. Pollock and David Peralta have the potential to be very good players, but they couldn’t stay healthy last season and that led to the team’s downfall. Meanwhile, there are glaring weaknesses for Arizona at shortstop, 2nd base, and catcher. Offense shouldn’t be a major problem for Arizona especially considering that they play at hitter-friendly Chase Field. It is the pitching staff that made Arizona a terrible team last season and it could once again be an issue in 2017. Zack Greinke, Patrick Corbin, Robbie Ray, Shelby Miller, and Taijuan Walker makes for a very good starting rotation at first glance. However, Greinke, Corbin, Ray, and Miller all had terrible seasons in 2016 and it was the major contributing factor for a 69-93 season. Taijuan Walker was the big addition this offseason for the Diamondbacks, but he has struggled with consistency while playing for the Mariners. Miller, Walker, and Greinke were supposed to be impact additions for Arizona and they will have to live up to expectations if this team goes anywhere in 2017. The offense should be good in 2017 for Arizona as long as everyone stays healthy for the most part, but I just don’t see how their pitching staff will magically improve in order to contend.

Prediction: 4th place in NL West
