The Oakland Athletics had a big need in center field heading into next season, but it appears they’ve filled that role as they signed Rajai Davis to a 1-year/$6 million contract. Davis is 36 years old heading into next season, but he is still a very productive player especially with his defensive skills and baserunning. Davis led the american league with 43 stolen bases last season with Cleveland which is a surprise considering his age. He will definitely provide some more much needed speed for the Athletics. Also, if he has a good year and Oakland is out of contention then he could be a valuable trade chip as well. He is a major upgrade over what Oakland would have had in center field for the 2017 season. Jake Smolinski and Brett Eibner were the only options for Oakland if they hadn’t signed Davis. Davis brings much more experience than those guys and he brings a very good temporary solution to Oakland in center field. Davis has never been known as a good offensive player, but he can help the Athletics in that area a little bit. He is a consistent hitter as he has a .267 average throughout his career. However, he doesn’t have much power as he hit a career high 12 home runs with the Indians last season. Either way, this is a really good signing for Oakland as they add a weapon to the top of their lineup. Oakland might not be a contender in 2017, yet Davis at least makes them a better team in many areas.
