Avila signs 1-year deal with the White Sox

Former all-star catcher Alex Avila is staying in the AL Central as he leaved Detroit on Wednesday to sign a 1-year deal with the Chicago White Sox. It is clear that Avila isn’t the player he was just a few weeks ago, but maybe a change of scenery could be good for him. Avila hit only .191 with 4 home runs last season, so it is clear that he probably isn’t going to give you much consistency on offense. However, he could be a very good backup to Tyler Flowers and maybe Avila can improve his offensive production to become the starter for the White Sox. This isn’t a bad signing for Chicago especially since backup catcher Geovany Soto just left to sign a 1-year deal with the Angels. It isn’t a risk to sign Avila and Avila is a really good backup option at the least to Flowers.

Grade: B – Avila needs to improve his offensive production, but he is a very good option as the backup catcher to Tyler Flowers.
